it’s funny how one picture, one song, one smell can instantly bring back a thousand memories. and for 5 minutes, you can sit back and just remember. or try to forget.
sometimes we go looking for these moments. searching through old blog/facebook posts. opening a dusty photo album. popping in a cd. buying the same flavor ice cream that you did the day he broke your heart.
other times, they come out of nowhere and surprise us. occasionally leaping into our hearts and rekindling flames that have been suppressed for years, waking us up to what we had forgotten. and then there’s the ambushers. the memories that attack us without warning and claw at those thoughts, opening the floodgates and allowing all of the things we have been shoving out to come rushing back, and there’s absolutely nothing we can do about it.
and then we cry. we laugh and we cry and we scream out for those memories to leave and never come back. and then we smile. because those moments, however horrible or wonderful or heart-breaking, make us who we are. they don’t define us, they refine us.
